March2015: The Price Of Living in Bartlett Texas

Having lived In  Bartlett for  over a year and hearing from as far as Holland to Taylor how expensive and how cheap things are (according to who you talk to) I  looked into it myself, based on my household and our situation. Keeping in mind we recently lived in Reno Nevada, Houston Texas and Temple Texas.

Housing
Our building cost 40% more than our 3500 square home in Suburban Champion Forest (Houston)
There are apartments in Houston that rent for 400.00 a month

There are apartments in Temple Belton and Killen that rent for 500-700 a month

Salaries: I am aware only of several employee salaries.
The Mayor is Rumored to have a part time salary of $350.00 a month. I do not have actual data nor do I have a plan to request it.

The School Superintendent does make a little over $100,000.00 a year per his contract plus benefits. I am not sure what his level of education is ,but if his duties are consistent with those of a moderate school district and the city of Bartlett has the funds , in my opinion his salary is competitive.

The City planner/administrator, whose job has been the source of a great deal of discussion around Bartlett  makes  around $78,000.00 plus benefits per his lucrative contract. Not sure of his level of education, experience  or job description, but any one who wants to know can submit a records request to the city to obtain this information. Mr. Hill was hired by the city with a back ground in finance. His credentials were never questioned as they checked out. He has taken a lot of heat for his personal life and trials, but at the end of the day if the City officials of Bartlett feels Mr. Hill is the best candidate for the job, the funds are available to pay him and he meets the criteria for the position, why is there continued concern? His actual contract is posted on this blog.

Please read  the page title  Local Government for a brief contrast bt Bartlett, Holland and Granger.

It is the role and responsibility of the elected Mayor and City council to hire city employees to conduct city business. Therefore if the citizens of Bartlett vote for a particular Mayor, they are also voting for the mayor's cabinet or chose of employees, they are also voting for the mayor's views on how the city will be run. Whether citizens vote by ballot or by default(choosing not to vote) someone will win, some one will be in power, some one will  run the city.
